Monday - St Andrews St Pk to Destin to Santa Rosa Beach

Two owls called most of the night last night. This morning, I saw several birds, including the woodpecker pictured here. As you must know by now, Fifi loves birds, but she won't bore you with all the names of birds she saw but didn't photograph.

Today was a day of driving and sightseeing in the Florida panhandle. But prior to leaving, we had to break camp.

From Panama City, we drove along the shore as close as possible to the water. We now know why it is called 'The Emerald Coast.' The Gulf Of Mexico was several shades of green and blue, sparkling in the sunshine. We drove all the way to Mary Esther, FL, past Fort Walton Beach to see the beautiful homes, cottages and of course, the water. With all that water, we decided we needed to have some fish today. We stopped at a place called Grayton Beach where Fifi had been several times before. We ate lunch at a place called Picolo's at the Red Bar. Only two fish items appeared on the lunch menu, and we both chose grilled mahi mahi sandwiches. They were luscious! Along with a fresh salad of Spring greens, and a side order of homemade onion rings, we were begging for mercy by the time we put our napkins down on the table. We highly recommend this restaurant if you are travelling near Grayton Beach.

We then spent a lovely afternoon on the beach, and took a few photos for our faithful readers. Juanita is now conjuring up businesses she could run in order to afford the $$$ she needs to spend winters on the Emerald Coast.

Nightfall finds us hunkered down at our last RV campsite of this leg of the trip. It is in the Top Sail State Park in Santa Rosa Beach. It is quite beautiful, and has a tram that takes campers the .7 miles down a bike/tram trail to the beach. In the summertime, I expect it might be difficult to get a reservation here because it has extras that you don't usually see in State Parks -- like a swimming pool, tennis courts, and others.

We are probably going to take day trips during the next week. Fifi is waiting for the Duke's answer about taking care of her house across the street and dinner each night. But she thinks she'll probably have to go back to Memphis soon. The good news is that Juanita and Fifi tested all of the equipment on Fifi's RV, from windshield wipers to microwave and it all works!!!

Lastly, a special thanks to Cuz Cathy. We found that wooden coaster you were asking about. It's on Highway 98 in Panama City. They were working on it and said it would be ready to ride in a couple of weeks. It is called the Cobra.

I didn't know that breaking camp was so involved. Maybe RVing isn't for everyone.

Have you two ever had a rainy day on your adventures? It doesn't seem like there is any particularly pressing need to ever end this expedition. Maybe a couple of days penned up in SCargo in inclement weather and you might get snailfever?

I still say you oughta both consider an Oregon coast RV trip next. Start saving and scheming your next Thelma and Louise venture (minus the crime and ending, of course). Better wait a few months for warmer weather though. The wind is hell out there in the winter.

This is for finfully -Juanita and I so look forward to your witty comments. We are retracing our route back to Apalachicola. I love to type that word. right now the beach is 2- ft off the right oside of the V. Juanita is driving. Now that I know she is a good driver, we can plan that Oregon trip. Oh- by the way, we have had perfect weather the entire trip. We don't want the trip to end, but 'nita has the Duke at home, leaving town on Sat., while Fifi is as free as a bird.

"free as a bird"...hmmm, I'm doubling my 401k contributions right away...I wanna do this....it seems when I take just one week vacations as an employed person and come to Florida to reap Juanita's and the Duke's gracious hosting, I usually get 3-4 days of clouds and/or rain. But it seems retirees vacay in Florida and get 3 weeks straight of pure sunshine!!! Lucky devils.

Where's the Duke heading to now? Tuvalu perhaps? What's the count now for the Duke? 247 countries visited thus far? I think J and F should challenge the Duke to a competition...see if you can visit more U.S. counties than the Duke has visited countries. Just drop the dits off at my place on your northern route. But give Buster to Marv down the street...or the Contractor.

Love that coaster. Maybe next Spring. Yes, give Buster to the contractor. Maybe he can take a nip or two out of him.

The "subcontractor" (how clever) suggests "breaking camp" is too involved. Let's hope s/he is kidding.

I can see why Fifi took a friend on the trip, holding that little box open while simultaneously pulling out that big heavy plug must work up a real sweat! Two people make it less stressful.

And this comment from the entry was a real shock:

"Top Sail State Park ... is quite beautiful, and has a tram that takes campers the .7 miles down a bike/tram trail to the beach."

Yeh, who would expect campers to actually walk to the beach? If campers wanted exercise they would stay home and go the gym.
